Chelsea captivated by perfect Thiago Silva replacement who has impressed at the World Cup

Piero Hincapie, Ecuador, November 2022

Chelsea have joined the list of suitors for Ecuador centre-back Piero Hincapie, who they reportedly feel would be an ideal replacement for Thiago Silva.

Hincapie has been linked with a few sides of late. Indeed, Tottenham and Arsenal have both been the subject of reported interest over the past few months.

The centre-back has been in good form since moving to Bayer Leverkusen two seasons ago. He made 27 appearances in his first season, showing his versatility, as he played either as a centre-back or a left-back.

Leverkusen managed to finish the season in third place. For a new signing to have slotted into a side in such good form showed the quality he possesses.

Hincapie has missed just three games between the Bundesliga and Champions League this season. Each of those have been due to suspensions.

That he is playing consistent minutes in the Champions League as a 20-year-old also highlights how good he is.

As such, it is little surprise that there are a few sides keen on him.

Chelsea have now added their name to that list, according to the Mirror.

Chelsea keen following Hincapie World Cup outings

The Blues’ interest stems from Hincapie’s World Cup performances. Their scouts have reportedly been ‘checking’ on the defender in Qatar.

They will have been impressed by the fact the Ecuadorian was part of a defence that kept a clean sheet in the opener of the tournament.

That Ecuador only conceded once against group favourites Netherlands, and held them to a 1-1 draw, will have helped their views on Hincapie.

A good result in their final game against Senegal will see Ecuador through to the round of 16. Performing in the last group game, and then potentially the next round, will see the defender’s stock rise even more.

Hincapie is ideal Thiago Silva replacement

The Mirror suggests that Chelsea are studying ‘alternatives’ for Silva. Indeed, they know that he ‘won’t go on forever’ and a replacement is a good idea.

The Brazilian is 38, so his top-level career will surely be coming to a close soon. Hincapie could be the perfect man to take over from him.

The fact he is left footed means he could thrive on the left side of the defence. That would be a bonus, given none of Chelsea’s central defenders are left footed.

Given Hincapie is 20, the Blues could get a lot of good years out for him.

Leverkusen are reportedly ‘bracing themselves’ for bids for the centre-back. While he will likely not cost all too much, whatever the fee, Chelsea should have no problems in paying it.
