Bournemouth complete eye-catching Leeds raid with successful £23m bid after Chelsea pull out

New AFC Bournemouth signing Tyler Adams

New AFC Bournemouth signing Tyler Adams

AFC Bournemouth have officially announced the signing of Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams on a five-year deal for a fee of £23m plus add-ons.

The 24-year-old becomes the Cherries’ eighth signing of the transfer window so far, as Andoni Iraola aims to cement their position in the Premier League.

Adams was part of a Leeds squad that was relegated to the Championship last term. He put in some good performances, however, and it’s fair to say he was one player the Elland Road faithful didn’t want to see leave.

The midfielder made 24 Premier League appearances last term. Operating from defensive midfield, his best attributes are at breaking up opposition attacks. Adams made an average of  3.7 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game – putting him in the top 10% for both of those statistics.

Reports suggest Bournemouth agreed on a fee of £23m plus add-ons with Leeds, who will use the funds to make some of their own signings before the window closes.

Adams will give Iraola a solid midfield option who could arguably slot straight into the Cherries starting XI. The manager’s other options consist of Phillip Billing, Joe Rothwell, Ryan Christie and Lewis Cook.

Bournemouth seal Adams swoop

As per Bournemouth’s official websiteAdams will wear the number 18 shirt at Vitality Stadium and becomes only the sixth-ever player from the USA to play for the club.

The club’s chief executive Neill Blake also gave his reaction to the deal being completed.

“It’s been widely documented how much his talents have been recognised in this transfer window by other clubs, so to have him sign for AFC Bournemouth shows the ambition we have as a club,” Blake said.

“Tyler is an exciting player who possesses plenty of experience for someone that is just 24 years of age and we’re looking forward to working with him as he’s a player we know will be a great addition to our squad.”

It’s true that there has been plenty of interest in Adams this summer. As previously reported by TEAMtalk, Chelsea were very close to completing a deal for the United States international. They ultimately opted to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia instead of him.

Adams will be hoping to avoid back-to-back relegations by helping Bournemouth survive this season. They have picked up one point from their first two games so far.

It will be interesting to see if the midfielder is involved in their next fixture against Tottenham next Saturday.
