Founded in 1899 and originally known as Riverside AFC, the club changed its name to Cardiff City in 1908 and has been competing as such ever since. Their long and storied history has seen them win 22 Welsh Cups. Perhaps more significantly, though, they were also the first, and to date only non-English side to win the FA Cup, lifting it in 1927. Aside from that famed success, they have also competed in three other cup finals and spent a total of 17 seasons playing in the top flight of English football.
Currently managed by Mick McCarthy, the club is playing in the Championship. Previous managers who have spent a significant time at the club include Neil Warnock, Dave Jones, Frank Burrows, Cyril Spiers and Fred Stewart who was in charge for an incredible 843 games.
Nicknamed The Bluebirds, Cardiff traditionally play in an all blue kit. For a brief and controversial period between 2012 and 2015 the club switched to red kit as part of a strategy by owner, Vincent Tan, to make the club more appealing to international investors. After much pressure from disgruntled fans the team switched back to blue. Some of the club's most famous players over the years include Bill Hardy who played a record 590 games for the team. Other stars include Phil Dwyer, Len Davies, John Toshack and Robert Earnshaw.
