David Moyes sack latest: Report reveals when West Ham might wield the axe as two ambitious moves considered

A report has suggested when David Moyes might be let go by the West Ham board, with two recently sacked Premier League managers lined up as potential replacements.

Moyes is once again under pressure at West Ham following the 5-1 home thrashing by Newcastle United on Wednesday night. West Ham showed off some terrible defending as Newcastle eased past Moyes’ side to pick up all three points.

The disastrous result leaves the Hammers in 15th place on 27 points. They are level on points with 18th-placed Bournemouth, although they do have a game in hand on most of their relegation rivals.

Moyes has a top squad at his disposal which includes the likes of Declan Rice, Nayef Aguerd, Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta. But there is growing concern that they are only going backwards and could end up getting relegated to the Championship.

Relegation would be terrible for West Ham. It would guarantee that most of their big names would leave, while also seriously damaging the club’s finances.

Amid all the worry, the Daily Mail have provided an update on what Moyes’ situation looks like. They write that the Scot will remain in charge of West Ham for their match against Fulham on Saturday.

Co-owner David Sullivan ‘is backing Moyes in the short term’. However, the Fulham clash is described as ‘must not lose’ if Moyes wants to keep his job.

Should West Ham be beaten at Craven Cottage, then Sullivan will finally pull the trigger and look to bring in someone else.

David Moyes safe – for now

There are two reasons why Moyes has not been sacked so far. The first is that he has a good relationship with Sullivan and the club chief believes the situation is still salvageable.

The second is that West Ham have not yet landed on a suitable replacement. They have previously eyed Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel, but these moves were far too ambitious.

Should West Ham lose to Fulham, then the east London outfit will once again have to assess their options.

The report names two recently sacked Prem bosses as being potential candidates. The first is Brendan Rodgers, who was let go by Leicester on Sunday.

Despite Leicester’s struggles this campaign, Rodgers is still highly regarded after guiding the Foxes to the 2021 FA Cup trophy.

Joining Rodgers on West Ham’s wish list is Graham Potter. Like Rodgers, Potter lost his job at the weekend. He excelled during a previous spell at Brighton but was not able to take Chelsea into the top six.

West Ham believe either Rodgers or Potter would be a great appointment to take the club forward. However, they are also identifying short-term ‘firefighter’ candidates who will specialise in preventing relegation from the top flight. Rafa Benitez is one coach who falls into this category.

West Ham are facing a crucial period. If the team manages to beat Fulham and then go on a winning run, then Moyes will save his job and West Ham could save their Premier League status.

But if more defeats come West Ham’s way, then Moyes’ position will no longer be tenable and a replacement will simply have to be brought in.
