David Moyes tipped for West Ham sack as pundit names Champions League winner as ideal replacement

West Ham boss David Moyes

David Moyes is on borrowed time at West Ham with one former fans’ favourite suggesting a big-name manager as the ideal replacement for the under-fire Scot at the London Stadium.

The Hammers have enjoyed an excellent couple of seasons under Moyes’ charge. He guided them to a sixth-placed finish in the 2020/21 season, with the Irons at one point threatening to gatecrash the top four. That led to qualification to the Europa League, with West Ham going on a run all the way through to the semi-finals.

And despite their run in Europe, West Ham were still able to maintain their form in the Premier League, securing a seventh-placed finish.

As a result, West Ham’s owners granted Moyes some serious funds last summer. And in bringing in big-name stars like Lucas Paqueta and Gianluca Scamacca, the Hammers spent around £160m.

That was supposed to take West Ham to the next level. However, for whatever reason, Moyes has been unable to find the winning formula this season and the club finds themselves way down in 17th place.

Indeed, the Hammers were on a seven-match winless run before snapping the sequence in the FA Cup third-round win at Brentford.

Nonetheless, Moyes remains a man under pressure and reports last week suggested the Scot was facing the sack if results did not improve.

And while the cup win against the Bees, together with the draw at Leeds, having eased the pressure somewhat, all eyes will be on Moyes and West Ham to continue that improvement.

Indeed, rather than simply settle for what they have, former star Frank McAvennie is already pondering potential replacements.

West Ham tipped to replace Moyes with Jose Mourinho

Discussing their potential options if Moyes is fired, McAvennie reckons the no-nonsense approach of Jose Mourinho would serve them well.

“I don’t know who’s out there,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“Would Mauricio Pochettino come in and take the job? He’d come in and make players better that’s for sure.

“I don’t know if the fans would want [Thomas] Tuchel, they didn’t want [Manuel] Pellegrini. They were doing well then all of a sudden the backside fell out of the bucket.

“I don’t know who is out there. I always wanted [Jose] Mourinho in there, he’d be a great fit. Because he doesn’t stand for fools.

“Everything he said about Man United came true didn’t it. He got absolutely crucified for it but [Paul] Pogba and all of them, [Luke] Shaw, [Harry] Maguire not good enough and all of a sudden everyone notices that now.

“I wanted him years ago but I don’t know if he’d be accepted now. It wouldn’t be a problem for me that’s for sure. He’s a winner, he wins. Everywhere he goes he wins something.”

Mourinho is currently the manager of Roma, whom he led to UEFA Conference League glory last season. His contract in the Italian capital expires in summer 2024, meaning he is roughly halfway through his three-year arrangement.

However, the Portuguese has always made clear his love of managing in the Premier League. With Tottenham, Chelsea and Man Utd already on his CV, could the firebrand make West Ham his next destination?

Roma would not release him easily and West Ham would certainly need to pay a handsome sum to buy him out his contract.
