David Moyes now looks almost certain to vacate his position as West Ham United manager in the summer, according to reports.
Earlier this season, Moyes was close to being sacked by West Ham while they were in a relegation battle. It has represented a downturn in fortunes after finishing in the European places for two seasons in a row before.
But Moyes has managed to get results at the right time in order to stay in a job. And when recently pressed about his future, he confirmed he has been ‘planning for next season’ and has ‘no intention of leaving’.
However, an update from Football Insider has now revealed that Moyes is actually ‘planning to quit West Ham’ when the season ends.
The 60-year-old has led West Ham to the Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina on June 7. Whether he wins it or not, it now looks likely to be the conclusion of his second spell as West Ham manager.
There have already been suggestions that West Ham want to move on from Moyes in the summer anyway, despite him having a year of contract remaining.
Yet the report states that Moyes wants to leave ‘on his own terms’, seemingly meaning a resignation appears more likely than a sacking.
One ‘major factor’ behind his decision is that he has failed to develop the same kind of working relationship with his current backroom team as he previously had with Alan Irvine and Stuart Pearce.
Therefore, there could be an even bigger change in the West Ham dugout if Moyes walks away as is now expected.
David Moyes difficult to follow at West Ham
As things stand, it is not yet clear who might be in contention to replace Moyes at the London Stadium. He will be a tough act to follow after an impressive second stint with the club.
Other sources have suggested the likes of Rafa Benitez, Graham Potter and Brendan Rodgers might be of interest to the Hammers.
West Ham have confirmed top-flight survival for another season and will hope to cap the campaign off with a European trophy.
It would be quite the way for Moyes to bid farewell to the club after more than 200 matches in charge across his two spells on the touchline.
In terms of the Premier League, Moyes still has a home game against Leeds and an away match against Leicester to oversee. Therefore, even though West Ham themselves are now safe, they will have a big part to play in the relegation battle.
