Former Chelsea star thinks Cristiano Ronaldo could solve Blues ‘problem’ but only on one condition

Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has had his say on Cristiano Ronaldo’s future and whether or not a move to Stamford Bridge would work out.

Ronaldo currently finds himself as a free agent and is currently searching for a new club. The 37-year-old left Manchester United on the eve of the World Cup beginning.

The World Cup itself didn’t quite go to plan for Portugal and Ronaldo who were knocked out by Morocco. Ronaldo himself just scored the one goal against Ghana from the penalty spot.

The 37-year-old is now weighing up his options and has already been linked with several clubs from around the world. Al Nassr’s interest in Ronaldo has been well-documented over the past few weeks.

Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Ronaldo. Given their need to sign a striker in the January window, the link perhaps has some validity in it.

Gallas has spoken on the transfer rumour and laid out the one condition that could mean the transfer works out for both Ronaldo and the club.

The French defender told Genting Casino: “Chelsea have to buy a striker. They have to find the right striker who fits the system. It’s not only me who sees that problem.

“Chelsea are in the position where they are not scoring many goals, and Ronaldo could do that. It would have been difficult for him at the World Cup on the bench, so he needs time to think to avoid a similar situation to what happened at Man United.

“If he goes to Chelsea, it should only be until the end of the season but I think he could do a good job there.”

Chelsea need more firepower

Graham Potter’s side run the risk of missing out on Champions League football if they do not manage to sign a striker in January.

Chelsea have only scored 17 goals this season which is the fewest of any club in the top half of the table. They are currently projected to score just 46 goals all season.

Given Armando Broja’s recent injury set back, Chelsea are now even lighter in the final third.

In November Chelsea boss Poter spoke about getting more out of the players that he currently has at his disposal.

“I think there is more to come from the team we have and the group we have,” said Potter via Express.

“We’ve had some key players out: (N’Golo) Kante, (Ben) Chilwell, (Reece) James, Fofana. They are key players and a couple of them are replacing key ones who left in the summer. I think we can do better than we have and that is where my focus is on.”

The Chelsea boss also clarified his transfer stance ahead of January and confirmed that he regularly speaks with owner Todd Boehly.

“We have a regular dialogue anyway. Sometimes you need to reflect, think and analyse. Absolutely, we need to think about what’s happened and what we can do to improve.”
