Jamie Carragher tells Jurgen Klopp what must be done for Liverpool success; ongoing transfer saga now looks crucial

Jamie Carragher has urged Jurgen Klopp to sign a new defender and holding midfield player after watching Liverpool draw with Chelsea on Sunday.

The Reds headed to Stamford Bridge after a summer of change at Anfield. The German tactician has seen six midfielders depart, with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho seemingly the biggest two losses. Both have headed to the Middle East to play in Saudi Arabia while Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister have arrived on Merseyside.

There has also been a revolving door policy at Chelsea and it was Liverpool who took the lead in west London.

Mohamed Salah played in Luis Diaz who slid the ball home after 18 minutes.

But it was 1-1 at half-time as the Blues new signing Axel Disasi bagged from six yards out.

The visitors failed to clear from a set-piece and paid the price.

There were no further goals in the second period as the Premier League heavyweights shared the spoils from an entertaining contest.

Carragher was a keen observer in his role as a Sky Sports pundit. And the former Liverpool and England defender confessed that he felt the hosts bossed proceedings.

“Chelsea are a work in progress.,” he said on Sky Sports. “New manager, new players. I think they’ve been the better team today, there’s no doubt about it.”

Liverpool are next in action on Saturday when they welcome Bournemouth to Anfield.

It remains to be seen if Klopp has any new players at his disposal before the Cherries arrive as the Reds continue to be linked with many stars.

Carragher points finger at glaring Liverpool issue

Having lost both Henderson and Fabinho this summer, Liverpool are desperate to sign a new defensive midfielder.

Moises Caicedo was their number one target. But, despite the club agreeing terms with Brighton, it appears as though the Ecuador international will sign for Chelsea.

Romeo Lavia has emerged as an alternative target and there has been mixed news on the Belgium international.

It was claimed the 19-year-old was set to sign for Chelsea after the Blues offered Southampton £55m for his signature.

But fresh reports on Sunday afternoon contradict that story as Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri suggested Liverpool were ‘back in the race’.

It remains to be seen what happens with the youngster, who is certain to leave St Mary’s before the transfer window closes.

Carragher would clearly love to see a player of his class wearing the red of Liverpool. And the pundit has made it clear where he feels Klopp should look to strengthen.

“The big worry for me with Liverpool is defensively,” he added. “The last action sums it up as they had a corner and they nearly conceded a goal at the other end.

“Liverpool need a holding midfielder. They need a real defender, an out-and-out defender who can play right across that back four.”
