Jamie Carragher urges Man Utd to sign ‘outstanding’ striker: could be ‘absolutely fantastic’ under Ten Hag

Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher thinks Newcastle United centre-forward Alexander Isak would be ‘absolutely fantastic for Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag currently looking for a new forward.

The Red Devils have been linked with big names such as Tottenham captain Harry Kane in recent weeks, but the ex-Liverpool defender thinks the Magpies star would be the best option.

Newcastle only signed Isak last summer, though, so Eddie Howe is unlikely to let the 23-year-old go cheaply, especially to one of their biggest rivals.

The Red Devils are hoping to find a strike partner for Marcus Rashford, who has scored 27 goals across all competitions this term, with the club still looking for a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Wout Weghorst was brought in by Ten Hag in January as a stop-gap solution to Ronaldo’s departure – but he has failed to score in nine Premier League appearances so far.

As a result, the Netherlands international is unlikely to be in the manager’s long-term plans, while Anthony Martial has also been linked with a departure.

Carragher: Man Utd should sign ‘eclectic’ Isak

After a shaky start, Isak has now scored six goals in 11 Premier League appearances for Newcastle and is currently one of the most in form strikers in the division.

Now, despite suffering with injuries. Carragher thinks the 6ft 4in forward would be a perfect signing for Man Utd.

“I love him, I love watching him play,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“I mean, Manchester United need a centre-forward, you look at him and I think he would be absolutely fantastic for Man United.

“They could have got him at the start of the season. When I first saw him at Anfield, I think it was his first appearance, he looked outstanding and eclectic.

“Anybody who tells you that centre-forward play is all about scoring goals is just living in a dream world. Centre-forwards also have to be able to press in the modern game and he can do that.

“They have to press. They have to have pace. Energy, score goals and be involved in the build-up play.

“I just love the energy and aggression he’s got. Honestly, I think he’s absolutely fantastic. I think Newcastle have a special, special centre-forward.”

As mentioned, Newcastle paid £60m for Isak last summer and with his contract valid until 2028, so it would likely require a monumental bid from Man Utd to convince Howe to sell.

For now, both club’s focus will be on the battle for the top four, with Man Utd set to host Brentford, while Newcastle travel to West Ham on Wednesday night which could prove to be two crucial games.
