Key Chelsea man sends Boehly scathing blow as desire to quit Blues and return home ‘already decided’
Thiago Silva is reportedly ‘willing to give up’ his last season at Chelsea to end his career at Fluminese, and that will be discussed at the end of the season.
Silva’s key role for the Blues has been evident since his move from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2020. That he left the serial Ligue 1 winners for nothing suggested he might not have had a lot more to give.
Indeed, that was surely the opinion of PSG in allowing him to leave.
However, he quickly became one of Chelsea’s most important assets. While he missed a good chunk of his first season through injury, his performances did not go under the radar.
He performed very well last season, as he was available more often, and that was one of the key reasons for the Blues’ better league placement, improving upon their fourth-placed finish the season prior to come third.
Chelsea also conceded just 33 goals in the league last season, highlighting the strength of a defence in which Silva was a pillar.
Things have been going wrong as a whole at Stamford Bridge this season. Performances on the field are way below the standards expected of a Chelsea side, and two managers have been sacked this term as a result.
That’s not helped by a swelling squad – while a spend north of £500million might seem a positive, 16 players walking through the door across two transfer windows has meant it’s hard for the squad to gel and a manager to identify his best side.
Silva ‘already decided’ to quit Chelsea
That could be a reason for Silva’s decision to leave the club. Extra Globo reports Silva is ‘willing to give up his last season’ with Chelsea in order for a return to Fluminese.
What’s more, it’s reported it’s ‘already been decided’ in his mind, and it will be ‘officially dealt with’ after the conclusion of the season.
Silva is under contract for just one more year. What’s more, he has played almost every game he’s been available for this season – missing a few through injury.
However, another poor season would surely see his career fizzle out, given he’s now 38.
As such, it seems the right time to move to another side, ensuring he can see out the end of his career in style. It would be fitting for him to do so at Fluminese, too.
The Brazilian started his career there, making 80 appearances before moving to AC Milan. He’s not played club football in his home country since, making Europe his home due to massively successful stints at a few sides.
Indeed, a Champions League, a Club World Cup, seven Ligue 1 titles and a Serie A title are among his honours.
That being said, returning for a his swan song in Brazil, now that his career is winding down, but still with the ability to have an impact for another year or two, seems a fitting move.
It would be another smart acquisition from Fluminese in bringing back a former star. Marcelo also started his career there, and returned to the club in the winter. The link up between himself and Silva in the back line is an exciting prospect, and that particular return ‘brings a big smile to the coach’.
