Key reason revealed why Liverpool will snub Sancho for Werner
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has tipped the club to secure the services of Timo Werner at the expense of Jadon Sancho due to one key trait the latter does not have.
Speculation surrounding RB Leipzig centre-forward Werner’s departure to Liverpool has been mounting in recent weeks, with the latest report stating the player had given the club his word over the move.
The 24-year-old’s goalscoring exploits in the Bundesliga have made him one of the hottest properties that league has to offer, though Borussia Dortmund forward Sancho also fits that bill.
The Reds have been linked with both players, though their apparent favouring of Werner looks set to leave Chelsea and Man Utd in a two-way duel for England international Sancho.
With Sancho’s fee expected to exceed the £100m mark, Werner can be secured for half the price owing to his £52m release clause.
And ex-Red Nicol believes Liverpool should disregard Sancho in favour of Werner due to his superior versatility in the forward positions.
Nicol told ESPN FC (via the Daily Express): “I would go for Timo Werner.
“Werner basically can play all across the front line. Left, right and centre forward. Sancho could play left or right but I don’t think he could play up top.
“For that main reason, I would take Timo Werner.”
Werner has gone on record in detailing his admiration for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, and even offered up a cheeky hint about his suitability to the club’s system and tactics.
“There’s one of the best managers in the world with Jurgen Klopp, and he is also German,” Werner said (via the Express).
“Many things suggest that I would maybe fit in (at Liverpool) very well with my playing style.
“But I don’t think about that at the moment because we have so much to do with Leipzig.”
Despite the mounting speculation, Leipzig have not ruled out the possibility of retaining the services of their star striker.
Owing to the current uncertainty over football’s finances due to the coronavirus pandemic, Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche isn’t willing to rule out any possibility.
“It is clear that Timo has attracted interest from other clubs for his great performances with his goals and assists,” Krosche told Sport1.
“England has the same problems as we do. The crisis affects not just one league, it has a global impact, and we cannot say whether things will be the same in six months.
“Everything is possible. We do not know how the transfer market is developing. We are looking into a very foggy glass ball.
“We do not know what our resources are and what the other clubs have in terms of opportunities.”
