Wolves secure superb double coup and open talks with PSG over a third, with foundations now laid for Man Utd, Liverpool targets to leave in 2023

Wolves are on the cusp of signing two brand new midfielders that’ll greatly aid their survival charge and also pave the way for Man Utd and Liverpool-linked stars to leave, per reports.

Wolves have spent just six weeks combined outside of the relegation zone in the current campaign. They sit 19th at present, though Julen Lopetegui’s arrival is expected to breathe fresh air into the club.

They’ve already secured a critical 2-1 victory over Everton and have a crunch clash with West Ham on the horizon this weekend.

Victory at Molineux on Saturday would see Wolves leapfrog the Hammers and could push Lopetegui’s side out of the drop zone if other results go their way.

The January window has provided all 20 Premier League clubs with a chance to strengthen their hand. According to two separate reports, Wolves are on the cusp of doing just that.

Firstly, Fabrizio Romano reports Wolves are ‘set to sign’ Flamengo midfielder, Joao Gomes, and gave the deal his signature ‘here we go’ confirmation.

The 21-year-old has agreed personal terms and a five-year deal is reportedly in place. Wolves will fork out €17m (approx. £15m) to complete the coup.

Despite his tender age, Gomes already has well over 100 senior appearances to his name for Flamengo. The central midfielder favours the defensive side of the game and could make an immediate impact.

Elsewhere, Sky Sports report Wolves have found common ground with Ligue 1 side Nice over the signing of Mario Lemina.

The former Juventus and Southampton midfielder will move to Molineux for €10m (approx. £8.8m).

Lemina, 29, will reportedly arrive in the Midlands at some stage on Friday to undergo a medical. Sky’s reporting was subsequently backed up by Romano.

Lemina also operates primarily in the engine room and will bring a wealth of top flight experience. Aside from his two-year stint with the Saints between 2017-19, he also played for Fulham on loan during the 2020-21 campaign.

Sky also claimed Wolves are in talks with PSG over a move to sign Spain international Pablo Sarabia.

A permanent move is being eyed for the 30-year-old attacker. Sarabia can play on either flank or behind the striker.

Wolves deals could be good news for Liverpool, Man Utd

Wolves’ two midfield coups will no doubt ring alarm bells at Old Trafford and Anfield.

Ruben Neves has long been linked with both clubs, as well as a step up in class in the near future.

Neves’ current deal expires in the summer of 2024. He was tipped to leave before the season began, though official bids were never tabled.

However, he’ll be entering the final year of his deal at season’s end and as such, the summer window represents the ideal time for Wolves to cash in.

Jurgen Klopp is a long-term admirer of Neves and Liverpool’s midfield deficiencies have been laid bare this term.

In the event interest his Neves has cooled, the Reds may turn to fellow Wolves midfielder, Matheus Nunes.

Liverpool were heavily linked with the former Sporting Lisbon star before Wolves activated his £38m release clause in August.

Their interest has not subsided since joining Wolves, according to Romano.

With Lemina and Gomes due to bolster the ranks, a requisite exit for a midfielder already in place at some stage in 2023 is the logical next step.
