Newcastle identify alternative to Arsenal star by preparing to test theory about £36m Serie A ace

Lautaro Martinez, Federico Dimarco, Inter Milan, October 2022

Newcastle United have added another option to their list of wing-back targets for the summer transfer window, after reports in Italy revealed their interest in an Inter Milan star.

Ahead of the summer transfer window, Newcastle have been looking for left-backs they can add to their squad. Currently, they have Dan Burn and Matt Targett as their main options there. However, they are on the lookout for an upgrade.

A few sources have indicated that Newcastle could make a move for Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney. The Scotland international could be made available by his current club in the summer after losing his place as a regular starter.

Therefore, Newcastle have established themselves as contenders for his signature. However, they are not his only suitors – nor is he their only option.

According to Inter Live, Newcastle have also shortlisted Italy international, Federico Dimarco.

This season, the wing-back has become an “immovable” player for Inter. Now, Newcastle might be ready to test their resolve about how secure he really is at San Siro.

To sign him, they will have to bid above €40million (towards the £36m mark). In that case, Inter could accept their academy graduate’s departure.

Inter Live has also got wind of Newcastle’s interest in Tierney, but with the understanding that Dimarco is a valid alternative. If Newcastle pursue the latter, the Arsenal man may have to look elsewhere. Recent links with Targett’s former club, Aston Villa may begin to hold more weight.

Newcastle to choose between Dimarco and Tierney

For now, though, Newcastle have some deliberation to do about which full-back to choose.

This season, Dimarco has played 31 times in all competitions. Along the way, he has scored four goals and set up five more for his teammates.

Of his 23 appearances in Serie A, 20 have been starts. In contrast, Tierney has only started four of his 17 Premier League appearances in the current campaign.

Both are of the same age, at 25 years old. With Dimarco currently more active, though, he may be a preferable choice.

That said, he has never played in the Premier League before and seems happy enough at Inter. Therefore, in theory, he might take some convincing in order to make the move.

Dimarco’s contract with Inter is due to run until 2026. However, they may have to make some sacrifices in the summer to balance the books. Hence, his future could still be up for question.

If Newcastle are able to take him next, they would be securing the services of an eight-cap Italy international for what should be the prime of his career.

He could offer the extra attacking output they are looking for at full-back. Yet he is defensively sound too, so much so that he has even played as a centre-back, on the left of a three, at times for Inter this season.

Meanwhile, Newcastle appear to be threatening a Liverpool plan to sign a Chelsea star by launching their own pursuit
