Man Utd barge Tottenham aside with deal to sign 171-goal forward seen as ‘inevitable’; bargain move accelerating rapidly

Roma forward Paulo Dybala is a target for Man Utd and Tottenham

Tottenham will reportedly miss out on the signing of Paulo Dybala amid claims Manchester United are ready to trigger the Roma forward’s bargain exit clause in the coming days.

The World Cup winner moved to Roma last summer as a free agent following the expiry of his deal at Juventus. Seen as one of the best all-round forwards in the Italian game, the capture of Dybala was a real coup for Jose Mourinho’s side.

To that end, Dybala picked up at Roma where he had left off at Juve, scoring 18 goals and adding seven assists at his new club.

However, in his deal there contains a clause whereby he can leave the Stadio Olimpico for a cut-price fee of just €12m (£10.2m). That would not likely have come into play had Roma not failed in their quest to secure Champions League qualification.

Indeed, the Giallorossi could only finish sixth in Serie A with their focus going into their Europa League campaign. Success in that competion would have earned a UCL place. Mourinho’s side, however, came up short after losing in a penalty shootout in the final against Sevilla.

As a result, the forward finds himself linked with several big-name suitors. Indeed, Chelsea have this week been linked with a move for the 29-year-old star.

The Blues, though, are instead pursuing a move for Dusan Vlahovic and are unlikely to move for Dybala. Indeed, with Christopher Nkunku arriving at the club this summer, the Blues are already sorted for a No 10.

That will leave both Tottenham and United to slug it out for the 38-times capped Argentina star.

Man Utd favourites to sign Paulo Dybala

However, as reports in Italy point out, it is advantage United in the pursuit for Dybala.

The Red Devils are very much in the market for a new forwards this summer. To that end, both Wout Weghorst and Anthony Martial are likely to leave.

And while the likes of Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen are ambitious targets, their hunt appears to have narrowed down to Rasmus Hojlund.

To that end, a deal for Hojlund will likely set Man Utd back a fee in the region of €50m – €60m. United do have to keep a close watch on their spending this summer, amid FFP regulations. However, there remains room in their budget to bring in another attacking option.

And Ten Hag can boost his own coffers by offloading the likes of Martial, Anthony Elanga and Jadon Sancho. Indeed, England winger Sancho has on Saturday been linked with a staggering move that would leave Ten Hag squirming.

Given Dybala can be signed for just £10.2m, the addition of the forward, who boasts 171 career goals, is seen as too big an opportunity to miss.

UCL football the key for Man Utd

Now according to il Corriere dello Sport, United are paying ‘great attention’ to the situation around his future.

And a move to bring the Argentine to Old Trafford is likely to arrive in the coming days. To that end, United will reportedly inform Mournho and Co of their intention to trigger his release clause. And with personal terms unlikely to be an issue, a deal to bring Dybala to United could accelerate quickly.

Furthermore, the report claims that while Tottenham are also keen on Dybala, United’s prospective move is seen as ‘inevitable’.

The Red Devils can offer Dybala the UCL football he craves. And with a far better chance of lifting silverware at United, a move for Dybala looks relatively straightforwards.
