Man Utd boost as Bayern Munich ‘pull out of race’ for Ten Hag favourite; €50m fee mooted amid Chelsea links

Edson Alvarez and Erik Ten Hag

Bayern Munich have reportedly ‘decided not to enter the race’ for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez, who is a key target for Manchester United.

The midfielder was impressive under Erik ten Hag during his time with the Dutch club. Now, the Red Devils’ boss is eyeing a stunning reunion.

Chelsea reportedly attempted to sign Alvarez last summer. However, Ajax were unwilling to let him go at the time.

Now, it seems Man Utd are poised to make an offer for the Ajax playmaker.

Indeed, as reported by Football365, Alvarez is Ten Hag’s ‘favourite’ target with the Red Devils willing to make a bid worth €50m (approx. £43.4m).

This season, the 25-year-old has made 42 appearances across all competitions for Ajax. In the process, he has scored four goals and made three assists.

Generally operating as a defensive midfielder, Alvarez’s best attributes are breaking up opposition attacks, as well as his excellent passing range.

With that in mind, he could potentially be a long-term replacement for Casemiro, or, a short-term one for Scott McTominay, who looks set to join Newcastle this summer.

Bayern Munich pull out of Alvarez race

Now, according to reputed transfer journalist Florian Plettenburg, Man Utd have received a boost in their pursuit of Alvarez.

On TwitterPlettenberg said Bayern Munich have ‘decided’ against signing the Ajax star as they have ‘other plans in central midfield.’

However, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Newcastle United still have an interest in Alvarez – who is ‘ready for the next step in his career.’

After Chelsea saw their approach for him rejected last summer, Alvarez vented his frustration very publicly and expressed his desire to join a ‘big club.’

“There was interest from Chelsea. Nobody expected that they would make another offer. It was a difficult situation,” Alvarez said.

“Ajax really couldn’t do anything. They didn’t have a player in my position. Of course I fought as far as I could. I didn’t want to do that too much.

“Because I know the responsibility I have within the club. I am very disappointed, but I am convinced that sooner or later a big club will come for me.”

Now, with Man Utd reportedly poised to submit a €50m offer for Alvarez, he may just get his wish.

At the moment, though, the Red Devil’s focus will be solely on one thing – qualifying for the Champions League next season.

But, a reunion between Alvarez and Ten Hag at Old Trafford seems to be on the cards for the summer.
