Manchester United are moving ever closer towards the signing of Andre Onana with a fresh offer set to be submitted for the Inter Milan star on Thursday and amid a growing belief an agreement can soon be reached.

The Red Devils are currently without a No 1 after allowing David De Gea’s contract to expire without a fresh agreement. The long-serving Spanish stopper was asked to take a reduction on his vasy £375,000 a week package. And while a new offer was presented to him, complications over negotiations meant an agreement could not be reached.

However, with Ten Hag wanting to sign a goalkeeper adept with the ball at his feet – arguably De Gea’s main weakness – the signing of an upgrade has always been a strong possibility.

And after making their first signing of the summer in Mason Mount, United are now stepping up their push to bring in Onana.

The Cameroon keeper has established himself as one of the elite goalkeepers in the world game. A disciple of Ten Hag’s at Ajax, he has brought his game to the next level since signing for Inter Milan.

As such, it is no surprise to see United making a push to bring Onana to Old Trafford.

And while Inter are willing to talk, it seems they’re unwilling to sell for anything less than their asking price.

To that end, United saw an opening €40m offer for Onana swiftly batted away by Inter. As a consequence, reports claim United could instead look to Brighton for a Plan B.

However, Ten Hag remains determined to land his man. To that end, the Dutchman has made clear his wish to the United board to be reunited with the Onana.

As a result, Ten Hag has reportedly convinced the Red Devils to raise their bid for the 34-times capped Cameroon keeper.

And according to Gazzetta dello Sport, United will raise their offer by a further €10m to €50m (£42.6m).

That still does not quite meet Inter’s €60m (£51.2m) valuation. However, with the difference between the sides now at around £9m, there is growing optimism that a deal can be struck.

To that end, United and Inter are expected to thrash out an agreement on Thursday. And with bonuses and add-ons being factored in, it is expected an agreement between the sides can be reached.

That will leave Ten Hag ecstatic with Onana very evidentally his top target to fill the goalkeeper vacany.

Asked about the possible sale of Onana, Inter’s sporting director Piero Ausilio is happy to stand his ground.

“Right now Onana is Inter’s goalkeeper,” Ausilio told the Daily Mirror. “He’s one of the strengths of the team and with strong players we’d like to move forward.

“If opportunities arise, we’ll evaluate them. But to date they haven’t arrived or they don’t meet our expectations.”

Inter are due back for pre-season training next week. Ausilio added: “In this moment he’s our goalkeeper and Andre is key player for us. We’d like to keep him, then we’ll see what happens. We wait for him on July 13 for pre season.”

Reports, however, suggest Onana is unlikely to return to pre-season at Inter. And with an agreement on a fee reportedly close, Onana will then be granted permission to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical.
