New Tottenham goalkeeper: Levy pounces as top LaLiga side agree ‘strategic sale’ of €100m-rated elite star

New Tottenham goalkeeper - Giorgi Mamardashvili of Valencia is a target for Daniel Levy

Tottenham are reportedly closing in on an agreement for Hugo Lloris’ successor after reports in Spain claimed a cut-price deal was close to being struck for one of LaLiga’s best shot-stoppers.

Veteran France star Lloris has been a fixture in the Spurs goal for 11 seasons now; the World Cup winner quite-rightly regarded as one of their greatest-ever imports.

However, with mistakes creeping into his game in the season just gone, Lloris found himself usurped as No 1 by Fraser Forster.

As a result, it’s been widely reported for several months now that Tottenham would seek a new goalkeeper this summer.

That search has seen a plethora of names linked, with Jordan Pickford, Illan Meslier and Andre Onana just some of the names linked. Indeed, this feature explored all 20 goalkeepers tipped in the papers for a move to N7.

However, in recent weeks that search appears to have honed in one option in particular: Brentford’s David Raya.

The Spanish stopper has seemingly in the clear to leave the Brentford Community Stadium this summer. His current deal has just a year left to run and the Bees are unwilling to lose the asset on a free.

As a result, talks have been ongoing over a potential deal. To that end, Brentford are hoping to achieve a fee of around £40m for the 27-year-old.

However, reports in Spain claim Spurs are ready to alter their objectives. And according to Plaza Deportiva, Valencia have informed a number of clubs of their intentions of selling Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Levy ready to make Mamardashvili the new Tottenham goalkeeper

The LaLiga club only avoided relegation by the tighest of margins last season. And with their financial issues well documented, they’re keen to sell at least one prized asset to ease their burden.

Valencia are currently holding off on bringing in any new players until at least one big-money sale goes through.

And that is where Mamardashvili comes into play.

Despite Los Che’s struggles, the Georgian goalkeeper enjoyed an excellent season on a personal level. Rated as one of LaLiga’s finest shot-stoppers, the 22-year-old appeared in 42 matches in all competitions.

Indeed, he is so highly-regarded by Valencia that they have placed a whopping €100m exit clause in his contract. However, in light of their predicament, they are willing to sanction his ‘strategic sale’ for a cut-price fee.

According to the report, their willingness to sell has alerted Levy and Tottenham. To that end, talks over a deal, potentially in the region of €20m – €25m (£17.1m – £21.45m), are set to get underway.

To that end, Levy is looking to get a deal over the line quickly. And the article claims contact has already been established between the north London giants and the player’s representatives.

The article concludes that those in charge at Valencia are dreaming of a higher amount for Mamardashvili. However, their need to sell means they don’t come into the talks from a strong bargaining position. As a result, Tottenham are fully ready to take full advantage.
