‘Not even a debate…’ Man Utd fans bemused as Carragher makes controversial Sir Alex vs Guardiola claim

Former Liverpool defender and football pundit Jamie Carragher has controversially weighed in on the Sir Alex Ferguson vs Pep Guardiola debate.

The Spanish gaffer lifted his first Champions League title with Manchester City last Saturday, after a 1-0 victory over Inter Milan.

However, Ferguson enjoyed a ridiculous amount of success during his time at Manchester United and spent significantly less money. So, it’s not easy to pick between the two greats.

Since arriving at Man City in 2016, Guardiola has lifted a staggering 14 major trophies, including five Premier League titles and of course, the Champions League.

In the process, he has created an astonishing team, that was easily the best side in Europe this season.

Also, the passing football he trademarked during his time at Barcelona – where he won 13 major trophies, including two Champions Leagues – has arguably changed how football is played.

On the other hand, however, Ferguson won a staggering 38 major trophies at Man Utd – including two Champions Leagues and a European Cup’ Winners Cup.

Also, when he arrived at the club in 1986, Man Utd were in serious danger of relegation. But, he went on to create a side that dominated English football for over two decades.

Carragher: ‘The greatest coach of all time…’

It’s also worth noting that Carragher’s quotes come just after Man City became the second English club in history – after Man Utd – to complete the treble.

Indeed, despite it being incredibly difficult to compare two greats from different eras, Carragher has still given his verdict on who the better manager is.

“For as long as Guardiola is at the Etihad, they will be the side everyone else fears – the best resourced team with the best manager,” Carragher wrote for Metro

“By adding the European Cup to his City CV, Guardiola has also added weight to the argument he is the greatest coach of all time.”

Carragher then backed up his point, by stating that Guardiola has created two incredible teams in his managerial career.

“Sir Alex Ferguson’s supporters will always suggest otherwise. The reality is it is not even a debate beyond this country,” he added.

“At two different clubs, Guardiola has created a side which has produced the most perfect football I have ever seen live, first with his Barcelona Champions League winners of 2011 and now City in 2023.”
