Tottenham on the trail of Serie A defender as Postecoglou reignites bargain transfer target from Conte years

Andrea Cambiaso Bologna 2023 TEAMtalk1

Reports in Italy claim Tottenham have made enquiries about Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso as Ange Postecoglou looks to strengthen his squad this summer.

Postecoglou is the man Spurs turned to after a dreadful campaign that saw them finish eighth. That means there will be no European football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2023-2024. But the north Londoners have still managed to secure a few signings this summer.

England midfielder James Maddison has joined Spurs from Leicester after the Foxes suffered relegation.

And they have also turned right-back Pedro Porro’s loan move into a permanent fixture.

Dejan Kulusevski has also penned permanent terms after his 18-month loan spell at the club.

It seems as though Postecoglou wants further defensive reinforcements.

Cambiaso first emerged on the Tottenham radar as long ago as March 2022 when Antonio Conte was at the helm.

The Italian tactician has moved on but Sky Sports Italy are reporting that Spurs have now made enquiries about the full-back.

The nature of the enquiries is not elaborated on but it may be that club officials have spoken to his agent.

It remains to be seen if Juve decide to let him leave but other clubs are also said to be interested.

AC Milan have been mentioned in connection with the stopper who has yet to kick a ball for his present employers.

Cambiaso needs stability after nomadic years

There is much for Postecoglou to deal with. There was frustration among the fans last term after a string of insipid performances.

And there was a sense the club lost its way, with Conte sacked in March before Cristian Stellini went the same way.

Postecoglou was not everyone’s number one choice to take over but arrived with a decent CV.

And landing Maddison was a real coup for the Australian as other clubs were keen on the talented schemer.

The future of Harry Kane will dominate proceedings over the next few weeks.

Many pundits felt it was inevitable he would leave despite bagging 30 top-flight goals last season.

Bayern Munich have been heavily linked while Manchester United are also keen.

However, it is by no means guaranteed that the England skipper will depart north London this off-season.

The new boss has scheduled talks with Kane to try and sort out his future.

And it would be a great boost to all at the club if he did opt to remain and sign a new contract.

The focus could then turn to new signings, with Cambiaso a possibility.

The 23-year-old began his career at Genoa. However, he spent time on loan with Albissola, Savona, Alessandria and Empoli before making his Genoa debut.

Last summer’s move to Turin was followed by another loan spell at Bologna.

He made 25 starts among 32 league appearances, impressing all as I Rossoblu finished ninth.

It is unclear whether Juve see the youngster in their plans. And reports claim they value him at €25m.

The report adds it would be a ‘large sum’ for any club to pay. But it is one that Tottenham could certainly afford.
