Liverpool gunning for surprise Prem signing worth £60m that’ll leave Newcastle crestfallen

Liverpool are in the mix with Newcastle for a surprise £60m signing, and while Arsenal and Tottenham cannot be discounted, the north London pair are unlikely to pose a serious threat, per reports.

The bulk of incomings and outgoings have and are expected to continue revolving around midfielders at Anfield this summer.

Indeed, a third addition to the engine room – potentially Southampton’s Romeo Lavia – is wanted to follow Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Regarding exits, Thiago Alcantara is courting interest from Saudi Arabia and varying outlets claim Liverpool are open to cashing in.

However, Fabrizio Romano previously stressed Liverpool do have other irons in the fire this summer, specifically in their defensive line.

A back-up right-back is wanted given the versatile James Milner has joined Brighton as a free agent. Elsewhere, a new centre-half is on the agenda.

Liverpool had been linked with Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven, though the Dutchman is now in line to join Tottenham.

Spurs as well as Arsenal have shown interest in Crystal Palace and England ace, Marc Guehi. However, Arsenal too aren’t expected to pose a threat to a Guehi transfer given they’re agreed to sign Jurrien Timber from Ajax.

As such, the path has cleared for Liverpool and Newcastle to pursue Guehi and per Football Insider, that’s exactly what’s about to happen.

The online outlet state Liverpool are ready to battle Newcastle for the 22-year-old who was a £18m signing from Chelsea two years ago.

Guehi has formed a superb partnership with Joachim Andersen at Selhurst Park and has become a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England squads during his time with the Eagles.

Palace would dearly love to retain Guehi and as such, have reportedly slapped a hefty asking price of ‘at least’ £60m on the centre-back.

FI acknowledge a fee of that size would be difficult to stomach for both Liverpool and Newcastle, though they intend to try their hand nonetheless.

Guehi has three more years left to run on his Palace contract, thus putting Roy Hodgson’s side in a strong bargaining position.

However, the chance to move to Newcastle who have Champions League football or Liverpool who’ll expect to bounce back strongly from a sub-par campaign could appeal.

Liverpool move a surprise, but would make sense

Liverpool’s current options at centre-half – Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and the exit-linked Nat Phillips – are all right-footed.

Romano claimed a left-footed option would be preferred by Jurgen Klopp and co, and while Guehi is right-footed, he has played predominantly on the left of the defensive pairing at Palace.

Liverpool moving for Guehi would come as something of a surprise given a third midfield signing would appear to be of greater importance right now.

However, with Matip having just 12 months left on his deal and links to Besiktas emerging, a move would make sense.

What’s more, Van Dijk – who currently owns the left centre-back role – endured a down campaign last year and turns 32 on Saturday.

Signing Guehi now would get Liverpool’s ducks in a row a season or two ahead of time.
