Roy Keane has torn into Manchester United after their 2-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, while also slamming Marcus Rashford for his performance at centre-forward.

A close-range finish from Pape Sarr in the 49th minute, plus a Lisandro Martinez own goal in the 83rd minute, gave Tottenham all three points over an underwhelming Man Utd side in North London.

Man Utd struggled against their ‘Big Six’ rivals away from home last season, and that trend continued on Saturday.

Rashford was selected up front, with Man Utd still waiting on new signing Rasmus Hojlund to overcome a back injury. But Rashford rarely managed to trouble the Spurs defence after the opening half an hour and was therefore replaced by Anthony Martial in the 85th minute.

When asked about Man Utd’s performance on Sky Sports (19/08 at 19:49), Keane responded: “Man Utd are the new Spurs. Desperate, absolutely desperate. Biggest insult I always think about teams, teams who can’t do it away from home.

“They’re a good team, they’re fancy when their home fans are in front of them and they’ve got that support and energy. United go away today, second half [they were] weak, [had] no leadership [and] gave bad goals away.

“Spurs were lovely, all credit to Spurs. But United, it’s easy to play against them.

“They were fine the first half an hour, but the game’s over a full 90 minutes. They’re obviously not gonna dominate that long but you’ve got to show some belief, fight [and] desire.

“They’re bringing on Martial – you might as well bring on Frank Stapleton and Norman Whiteside. Martial’s not gonna get you out of trouble.

Marcus Rashford ‘like a child’, says Roy Keane

“Rashford played through the middle again, the usual stuff. He’s like a child up there, he’s obviously not happy up there and his body language suggests ‘I don’t want to play up through the middle’. But you have to, you’ve got to do a job for the team.

“You look at the captain [Bruno Fernandes], senior players, established international players, they’re easy to play against. That’s the biggest insult I can give to United.”

Meanwhile, Man Utd have reportedly performed a huge U-turn on the future of attacker Mason Greenwood.
