Tottenham dubbed a ‘circus’ as scouts monitor Premier League winger tipped for big-money summer move
Former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton has dubbed his old club a ‘circus’, claiming that no one knows who is making the big decisions amid transfer links to a Premier League winger.
The Scot feels that any discussions over incomings and outgoings this summer could also be difficult, given the current confusion behind the scenes and the fact that there is no permanent manager in place.
It was reported by Football Insider last week that Spurs are keeping tabs of Nottingham Forest attacker Brennan Johnson. Indeed, club scouts are said to have watched the Wales international several times in recent weeks ahead of a potential summer swoop.
But after parting company with Antonio Conte and then losing sporting director Fabio Paratici, who received a worldwide football ban from FIFA, it’s unclear what sort of direction the club are going in at the moment.
There is also the small matter of Harry Kane not renewing his current contract, which will soon enter its final six months.
Potentially losing their record goalscorer could end up having a massive impact on who Tottenham can appoint as their next manager, let alone players they can then attract to the club who would have the unenviable task of replacing him.
And Hutton also fears that Tottenham’s stance on not really giving younger players a chance to show their worth means Johnson may look elsewhere for his next move instead.
Hutton told Football Insider: “As a young player you play with no fear.
“You are not thinking about going to a team and not playing. If he were to be bought by Tottenham he will be thinking ‘I am going to go there in pre-season and show them what I am all about, I want to play.’
“He will know who is in front of him.
“The more interesting thing for me is who is making those decisions? Who is going to watch him? It is a bit of a circus at Tottenham at the moment.”
Paratici replacement to have major role in boss appointment
They are valid questions from the former Tottenham, with Daniel Levy heavily criticised for his decision to replace Conte with the Italian’s assistant in Cristian Stellini – a move which does really promote clear thinking.
The Paratici farce has not helped, although Spurs have since appointed Scott Munn to a similar role.
The Australian is expected to play a major role in the club’s next managerial appointment, with a number of top names still being linked with the role despite all the upheaval.
Tottenham are back in action on April 15 when they face Bournemouth at home.
