Tottenham learn permanent transfer ‘impossible’ for unreliable star who is aggravating major issue

Sergio Reguilon taking a throw-in

One of the players Tottenham Hotspur sent out on loan this season will not be making his move away permanent in the summer, a report has revealed.

Several players still under contract with Tottenham have been plying their trade elsewhere in 2022-23. As well as youngsters needing to develop, a range of underwhelming signings from years gone by have been sent away.

For example, Joe Rodon is at Rennes, Giovani Lo Celso is at Villarreal, Tanguy Ndombele is at Napoli and Sergio Reguilon is at Atletico Madrid.

Tottenham have been hoping that any of them will find better form, perhaps leading to permanent exits. However, not everything has gone to plan.

In Reguilon’s case, injuries have been an obstacle to him making an impact at Atletico. Currently, he is out until the middle of March with a hamstring problem.

When he returns, he might be able to add to his five appearances this season. After all, his competitor for the left-back role at Atletico, Reinildo, is going to miss the rest of the season through an injury of his own.

Hence, Reguilon should finally have a chance to impress in the Spanish capital. It might be too little, too late, though.

Last month, a report revealed that Atletico boss Diego Simeone wants rid of Reguilon as soon as possible. Now, another update from Marca has reiterated how unlikely it is that they will be buying him from Tottenham.

According to the Spanish source, it is “impossible” that Atletico will ask to keep Reguilon into next season, even if that was via another loan deal.

His “unsuccessful transfer […] aggravates the problem” for Atletico in the left-back position, in Marca‘s words. Therefore, Simeone’s side are already looking for potential alternatives they can sign in the summer.

Reguilon needs fresh start away from Atletico or Tottenham

It means Reguilon will have to find another solution. A reintegration at Tottenham appears unlikely, despite his contract there being due to last until 2025.

At the age of 26, Reguilon will be hoping to end up at a club where he can play more regularly. There have been some rumours about a return to Sevilla, where he played on loan from Real Madrid during the 2019-20 season.

Wherever the destination, Tottenham will just be hoping they can bring Reguilon’s spell with them to a conclusion. He made 67 appearances for them prior to his move to Atletico, only scoring twice.

They are the club he has represented the most in his career, but it wasn’t to good enough effect for them to want to build around him in the future.

Instead, Tottenham can use Ben Davies, Ryan Sessegnon or Ivan Perisic at left-back, depending on which formation they use. Therefore, they might be able to move forward without Reguilon, as they already have been doing this season.
