Highly-rated Ajax centre-back Jurrien Timber has admitted he could leave the Dutch club this summer, amid links to Manchester United.

The 21-year-old’s comments came after Jaap Stam told him to join his former manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford next season.

Now, with Man Utd in the market for defensive recruits, they are one of the favourites to sign Timber.

As previously reported by TEAMtalk, Stam thinks Lisandro Martinez’s success for the Red Devils is proof Timber could also be a great signing.

Although, he did warn that there is a big step up from the Eredivisie to the Premier League. So, Man Utd will have to think carefully before spending big on the defender.

This season, Timber has played almost every minute of Ajax’s league games, showing his importance to the team. In the process, he has helped them to 10 clean sheets, as well as contributing two goals.

Given Timber’s previous relationship with Ten Hag, it’s no surprise the Dutch manager is keen to sign him. However, he will not come cheap, with Ajax slapping a £44m price tag on his head.

Timber hints at summer move

Now, in response to Stam’s comments, Timber has admitted that he could leave Ajax. Although, he came close to leaving last summer, too, so there are no guarantees at this stage.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport’s Kick ‘t Met, as cited by Voetbal PrimeurTimber said: “It’s the same situation for me as last season.”

“When I say I’m leaving, it has to fit. Important is playing style, playing minutes… Competing for prizes is also important. My favourite country? I dare not say.

“That’s why I’m doing the same as last season. The chance is there, it can happen, but I’m also comfortable here. I’m still young and here everything also suits me. I’m going to watch quietly.”

Indeed, Timber is widely regarded as one of the best, if not the best young defender in the Eredivisie. His solid displays for Ajax also earned him a call up to the Netherlands national team im 2021, for whom he has already made 15 appearances.

With that in mind, the youngster will have to think carefully before leaving Ajax.

But, if a switch to the Premier League is what he wants, Man Utd is certainly the most likely destination for Timber.
