Tottenham transfer mistake forecast with Levy urged to avoid low-cost signing and spend big

Tottenham Hotspur have been warned that Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu might not have the amount of experience they need.

Bazunu has been linked with Tottenham in recent weeks despite suffering relegation with Southampton. Spurs are in the market for a new goalkeeper to replace club captain Hugo Lloris, who could accept a lucrative offer to continue his own career in Saudi Arabia.

Reports on Friday proposed the idea of them bidding for Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy. However, Bazunu would be another target for the long term.

And given Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League, it might be an ideal time to snap him up.

It has been claimed that it might only cost £15m for Tottenham – or anyone else – to buy Bazunu out of a contract that should otherwise last until 2027.

Depending on where else they need to invest in, it might be a reasonable deal for the 21-year-old, even though he has struggled to convince during his debut season with Southampton.

Indeed, Spurs seem to believe in the Republic of Ireland international’s potential, which could make him their long-term Lloris successor.

However, former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton is concerned that the club should instead be buying a more senior – and in turn more expensive – keeper.

Tottenham swoop for Bazunu would be risky

“I think what Tottenham need is somebody with experience,” Hutton told Football Insider.

“Somebody that is going to come in and play week in week out, put in strong performances, deal with pressure. These are all big qualities that you need from somebody that you would have to go out and spend a lot of money on.

“It is probably a bit of a risk to go and get somebody so young because they are going to have days where they are a bit up and down, that is part of the learning curve.

“It will come down to money but first and foremost who is in charge. Who is picking the targets, what manager is coming in and how much they are going to spend, these will all be factors.”

As Hutton has alluded to, there is currently some uncertainty over who Tottenham’s key decision makers will be over the summer. They need to fill the head coach and director of football roles after the departures of Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici respectively.

As always, chairman Daniel Levy will have a big role to play in their summer business too.

Finding the right replacement for Lloris will not be an easy task. Although the captain has come under pressure recently, his long service to the club will make him a tough act to follow.
