Newcastle transfers: £30m Premier League centre-back offer revealed after Howe sanctioned late deadline bid
Palace defender Joachim Andersen was a late window target for Newcastle
Newcastle United reportedly had a late bid rejected for a Premier League centre-back during the summer transfer window after an injury to star defender Sven Botman.
Toon boss Eddie Howe was keen to strengthen his back line in the closing days of the window after Botman suffered an ankle injury in the defeat to Liverpool and is said to have sanctioned a move for Crystal Palace star Joachim Andersen.
However, Football Insider reports that the St James’ Park outfit’s £30m offer for the Denmark international was knocked back by the Eagles.
Howe wanted cover for Botman, Dan Burn and Fabian Schar and was keen to add to the summer additions of midfielder Sandro Tonali, winger Harvey Barnes and right-back Tino Livramento, while left-back Lewis Hall signed on loan from Chelsea and 18-year-old attacker Yankuba Minteh also joined.
Football Insider adds that Howe considered Andersen as an upgrade on Jamal Lascelles, who came on as a late substitute in the 3-1 loss to Brighton last weekend.
Schar and Burn were paired in central defence for that match, as Botman was ruled out, and struggled to cope with the home side’s pace and movement.
Howe wants proven Premier League quality
It’s reported that Howe wanted Andersen as a proven Premier League defender who has made a big impact at Selhurst Park since arriving from Lyon in 2021 after a successful loan spell.
The 27-year-old has so far played every minute of Palace’s four Premier League outings and featured 76 times overall for Palace.
Andersen also has three years left on his contract, meaning that his value is protected if Newcastle decide to go back in with a higher offer in the January window.
The Magpies are back in action on September 16 when they host Brentford in the Premier League.
