Two Man Utd legends and big-name pundit emerge as candidates for Celtic job after Ange Postecoglou heads to Tottenham

Two legendary former Manchester United players, including one who is also well-known for his work as a pundit, have been named as potential replacements for Ange Postecoglou at Celtic.

On Tuesday, Tottenham announced Postecoglou as their new head coach on a four-year contract. The 57-year-old becomes the first Australian to manage in the Premier League and replaces Antonio Conte, who left the club by mutual consent in March.

Postecoglou’s Tottenham move comes after he guided Celtic to a domestic double in the 2021-22 season and a domestic treble this term. He also has good pedigree elsewhere, having helped the Australia national team to win the Asian Cup in 2015 and picked up league titles in both Australia and Japan.

On the appointment, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said: “Ange brings a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play. He has a strong track record of developing players and an understanding of the importance of the link from the academy – everything that is important to our Club. We are excited to have Ange join us as we prepare for the season ahead.”

One of Postecoglou’s first jobs will be to sit down with Levy and decide what to do with star striker Harry Kane. He will soon enter the final 12 months of his contract and is unlikely to sign a new deal amid interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.

But while Postecoglou prepares to embark on a new challenge in England, Celtic fans will be wondering which manager will take charge of their team in the near future.

Both Glasgow World and the Manchester Evening News’ live transfer page (06/06, at 20:09), have revealed that one of two former Man Utd stars may join. The first is Roy Keane, who played for Celtic in 2006 after leaving Old Trafford.

The former Republic of Ireland international then had spells in charge of Sunderland and Ipswich Town. He was assistant manager for the Irish national team, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, but has been working as a pundit for Sky Sports since September 2019. Keane has provided fans with a lot of entertainment thanks to his no-nonsense style of punditry and his rants at some of Man Utd’s poor performances.

The second ex-Man Utd player who could take over at Celtic Park is Michael Carrick. He hung up his boots in July 2018 and spent time working as a first-team coach under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, before being appointed on a caretaker manager basis once the Norwegian was sacked.

Carrick soon decided he wanted to become a permanent boss elsewhere and went on to link up with Middlesbrough in October. He has done a great job at Boro, helping them to climb to fourth in the Championship, though they were knocked out in the play-off semi-finals by Luton Town.

Keane and Carrick are not the only candidates to join Celtic, as Brendan Rodgers, Enzo Maresca and Steve Clarke have been declared as early frontrunners as well.
