West Ham urged to axe David Moyes and head in ‘completely new direction’ by landing top Championship boss

David Moyes on the touchline during a West Ham match

West Ham have been told to sack manager David Moyes even if they stay in the top flight, with a pundit suggesting an impressive Championship coach as his replacement.

Moyes has come under pressure at West Ham this season amid his team’s poor performances and results. They sit just above the relegation zone in 17th place at the time of writing, one point ahead of the bottom three.

The Irons have won just two of their last 10 Premier League matches. Their last league outing ended in a shocking 4-0 loss at the hands of Brighton.

The 2-0 away victory over AEK Larnaca in the Europa Conference League in midweek will have helped Moyes’ cause somewhat. But there is still huge pressure on the manager and team to pick up a result this weekend. Unai Emery’s Aston Villa visit the London Stadium on Sunday at 14:00.

Former Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor thinks Moyes should be axed even if he manages to steer the club to safety this season. Such a move would allow West Ham chiefs to appoint a coach excelling in the second tier.

“It has been a bad season and the fans are really unhappy, even with the success they’ve had,” Agbonlahor said in an interview with Football Insider.

“If they stay up, it might be for the best to move on from Moyes.

“If there’s a Michael Carrick out there and willing to take the job – then why not freshen it up? It’s a completely new direction.

Potential Moyes successor has ‘done so well’ in Championship

“He’s done so well with Middlesbrough and there aren’t many people who had a playing career like him. He knows the club too.

“Maybe Moyes’ time as a manager has come to an end. He’s had a great career, but it could be time to stop.”

Moyes has credit in the bank at West Ham after taking the club into the Europa League and Europa Conference League in the last two full seasons. However, patience is wearing thin among fans now. They believe West Ham should be far higher in the Prem standings with the talent Moyes has at his disposal.

Carrick would certainly be an interesting appointment. After being Manchester United’s caretaker manager in late 2021, he left Old Trafford to pursue a career as a head coach.

Carrick landed at Middlesbrough in October 2022 and has so far done a brilliant job at the Riverside Stadium.

When the former midfielder joined Boro, they were one point above the relegation zone after losing five of their first 11 league matches of the campaign. Carrick has transformed the club and they now sit in third place, seven points behind second-placed Sheffield United.

Carrick is still relatively new to the managerial scene. But he seems to possess the tactical nous and man-management skills to become a success in the Premier League.

West Ham have previously made contact with Jose Mourinho about replacing Moyes, according to reports in Italy, but the ex-Chelsea boss wants to stay where he is.

Meanwhile, a recent West Ham signing could head to Italy as part of a player-plus-cash deal.
